John M. Watts, CLU is Executive Vice President of Michael White Associates
(MWA).
Recognized as an industry visionary, a general management innovator and a financial services trendsetter, Mr. Watts’ multiple successes have earned him a reputation both as a builder of profitable corporate operations and an engineer of unique distribution systems. The latter talent was dramatically demonstrated in the early 1980s when he and Michael White and a handful of visionary associates successfully orchestrated the debut of the nation’s first universal life product.
Prior to joining MWA, Mr. Watts served as chairman of the boards of Washington National Financial Services, Inc., and Washington National Equity Company, and as senior vice president and director of Washington National Insurance Company. He was president of Hartford Equity Sales Company, Inc., and vice president, sales and marketing, of The Hartford Insurance Group. He served as executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Lamar Life Insurance Company, chief operating officer of an institutional investment counseling firm, and director of marketing of a diversified financial services conglomerate. He started in the insurance business as an agent, rising through the ranks to brokerage manager and general agent.
Mr. Watts is immediate past chairman of the board of the National Center for Financial Education and former member of the Board of Regents of the College for Financial Planning and LIMRA’s Agency Officers Round Table, which represents the largest 50 insurance companies. He holds the Chartered Life Underwriter designation and has professional affiliations that include the Society of Financial Services Professionals and International Association of Financial Planners.
Mr. Watts earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Profiled in Who’s Who in America, Mr. Watts serves on several corporate boards of directors. He has written numerous articles in professional journals. He also authored the book The Financial Services Shockwave: Survival Tactics for Wall Street and Main Street, published by Prentice-Hall. Financial Strategies magazine described The Financial Services Shockwave as “required reading for all insurance agents, financial planners, stockbrokers, industry executives and anyone involved in the financial services industry. ... Mr. Watts served as Captain in the U.S. Army. His civic activities have included city councilman, Republican county chairman, member of the local board of the American Red Cross, and division chairman of United Way
campaigns.
